CBS SUMMIT BRINGS HUNDREDS OF EDUCATORS TO WESTMINSTER

Close to 200 teachers, principals and other education leaders from around the country came to Westminster in early October to learn more about Competency Based Education and why they should consider it for their districts and classrooms.

It’s a revolutionary approach to education that is gaining momentum across the country.

The 2021 WPS Summit “Surviving the Extremes” was held at the Denver Marriott Westminster Wednesday, October 6 through Friday, October 9.  The summit, which was first held in 2018, was postponed last year because of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Westminster Public Schools is the largest school district in the country to be entirely competency-based, where traditional grades are eliminated and students move to the next learning level only after showing mastery of a learning topic.  CBS allows students to take more time to fully learn a topic, when necessary, or advance more quickly if appropriate.

In addition to hearing three keynote addresses, visitors attended breakout sessions on various topics and on Thursday visited classrooms to see CBS in action.
