CBS 101

In a Competency-Based System (CBS), families may notice that their students do not receive letter grades on their report cards. Without the grades, families may often ask teachers for help in determining if their child is performing well in school. In Westminster Public Schools, it is a student’s progress that matters.

How are my student’s levels determined?

When a student starts school in Westminster Public Schools, a variety of assessments are given to help understand the correct performance levels for each subject. A student may be placed in a different level for each subject based on their needs. Students can move levels at any time throughout the school year when they show mastery of the required skills.

HOW CAN FAMILIES STAY INFORMED?

Each week, log in to your Empower account online at empowerwps.org.
Check your child's progress and scores on homework and class work.
Talk to your student about the learning targets they enjoy, and ask about areas where they may be struggling.
Once a month, talk to your student’s teachers about strength and growth areas. Praise your child’s successes and offer to help with any challenges.
